Assessing Student Learning: From Grading to Understanding, edited by David Allen, explores how teachers can improve their teaching by studying their students' work. The first section considers three ways to describe student work, including the Learning Record (see Examiner, Summer 1995) and the Collaborative Assessment Conference using portfolios (see Examiner, Winter 1997-98).

 

The second section presents three protocols which teachers have used to facilitate their study of student work. The important benefits of using such protocols, as well as difficulties in doing so, are both discussed. The final section considers three ways to put student work into a broader context to support learning. This is a rich and valuable book for educators interested in improving classroom and school-based assessment practices.
