K-12 Testing

The Eduators' Handbook on Effective Testing reviews dozens of commonly used tests, from college admissions exams to elementary and secondary school achievement tests. Each review covers the potential usefulness of the test for educators, including fairly detailed descriptions of test content and technical adequacy. Each review concludes with "Cautions and Comments." For example, readers are warned about the very limited predictive validity of college entrance exams. While some reviews of achievement test noted they are most suitable for measuring basic skills, only a few of the many important concerns about the use of such tests are discussed. While educators at times may be compelled to select the "best" of them, the inherent narrowness and frequently harmful consequences of standardized tests make them tools to be used with great caution.
