Deb Meier Book

K-12 Testing

FairTest board member Deborah Meier is a leading national voice for authentic school reform as well as performance assessment. Beacon Press has now published a short book, Will Standards Save Public Education?, which opens with a lead essay from Meier arguing that standardization is dangerous for democracy. She explains and critiques six assumptions underlying the standards-and-tests movement, then presents an alternative model in which high standards are not imposed through standardized exams but developed through serious work in the schools. Seven short responses follow, three supportive of Meier and four wholly or partially in opposition. Meier concludes the text with a brief reply. This is a useful book for exploring many of the arguments undergirding high-stakes testing. $12.00 from your favorite bookseller.
